About Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis has often been seen as something mysterious and strange, however, hypnosis is completely natural.  In fact you would have been in a hypnotic state thousands of times, and because it is comletely natural, you would never have even noticed it!

Have you ever found yourself driving along a motorway, maybe on your way to work, and all of a sudden realising that you had gone past your exit?  Or perhaps wondering how you actually got there in the first place? This can be associated with the trance like hypnotic state.

When we are dong things automatically, for example when we are driving, our subconscious mind holds the knowledge required to carry out the task - we do not consciously think "now change gear", "now apply the break" - our sub-conscious mind does all this for us.  When our attention is needed to change lanes, avoid something in the road, stop at a traffic light etc, our conscious mind will come into play again.

It is When we are in the relaxed hypnotic state that the subconsicious mind becomes receptive to positive suggestions.

Understandably, anyone who has not experienced hypnotherapy before may have some reservations. It must be stressed that hypnosis is not in any way harmful and should not be confused with stage hypnosis where subjects are often seen clucking like a chicken!

A hypnotherapist cannot make you do anything embarassing, shocking or unacceptable and you cannot be made to violate you own values or accepted patterns of behaviour.  For this reason, it would not be possible to change something that doesn't want to be changed.  For example, if a mother sends a child along to a hypnotherapy session to cure the childs phobia of spiders, the child may not want to "like" spiders so would reject any positive suggestions made to the sub-consious mind about spiders as these would be viewed as "negative" suggestions.

It is important to remember that a trance state can be terminated by you at any time.  It is your choice to enter the trance state and to leave it.  You cannot be left to remain in the trance like state by a hypnotherapist, you would either return to full consciousness on your own or enter a natural sleep which you would awaken from after a pleasant nap.

Hypnotherapy is a very pleasant, calming and relaxing experience.  You can expect to have a heightened feeling of well-being after every session and many clients attend sessions on a regular basis as it naturally relieves the stress and anxiety caused by everyday life.
